The History
our story
The founder of Welsh’s Motel – Wesley C. Welsh – was born & raised in Wall, SD. Having discovered an entrepreneurial spirit early in life, Wesley dreamed of one day opening his own business. Shortly after meeting his wife – Beverly Wheeler – the two decided to make that dream come true. After relocating back to Wall, SD from the “Big City” of Rapid City, SD, the Welshs engaged the help of Wesley’s parents in constructing what would later become Welsh’s Motel on the grounds of the family grocery store, which was a staple to local residents at that time.
The Welsh’s Motel opened its doors in 1958 as a truly family owned & operated venture, with Wes, his wife Beverly and his parents Harold and Mary all contributing to its success. A third generation was incorporated as the Welshs welcomed four daughters over the years. Pride in ownership is something that was always important to the Welshs. “That name on the sign is yours…” Wes would often remind his girls, “and it should represent integrity and pride”.
The motel is now owned by the Welsh’s third daughter- Kelly Welsh, who strives to continue her family’s multi-generational legacy of offering a clean and comfortable stay to all guests.
